The key function of a Pre-Purchase Examination is to provide a thorough medical review and evaluation so that a buyer can make a confident and informed decision whether or not to purchase a specific horse. The exam is intended to evaluate the horse for existing conditions that could present issues for its prospective intended use, and to identify issues that may require future management. It is a common misnomer that Pre-Purchase Examinations result in a pass or fail grade. Rather, the veterinarian provides the buyer with their findings during the exam to review and use for making the decision to purchase or forego the horse being evaluated. The veterinarian essentially acts as a professional consultant on behalf of the buyer.
Pre-Purchase Examinations can range from a detailed clinical evaluation of the horse to a more extensive diagnostic process which could include:
When you select Presidio Equine for your Pre-Purchase Exam, we will work with you, your budget, and your overall comfort level of the horse to determine what is appropriate in regards to further diagnostics based on the horse’s history and clinical examination findings.
We offer comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluations to determine whether your horse may be under-performing due to a pain or soundness issue. Diagnostics are used to determine the source of the pain if a gait asymmetry is present, and we will work together to determine what is the most appropriate course of action for you and your horse.
Presidio Equine understands the importance of having a clear understanding of all available options before making any major decisions. That’s why we always make ourselves available to review our findings and answer any questions you might have.
Lameness and performance evaluations are not always straight forward. Some performance issues are multifactorial and cannot be isolated with traditional blocks, while other conditions may have secondary issues that must be addressed as a critical component to the main issue at hand.
Presidio Equine is happy to collaborate with your primary veterinary on an existing evaluation. Should a second opinion be warranted for confirmation or simple reassurance, we are also happy to work with you and your horse to resolve that matter.
Acupuncture and Mesotherapy are two recognized treatment modalities that relieve pain via the 'gate control theory of pain.' These USEF safe therapies reduce pain related to musculoskeletal discomfort by overriding painful inputs with non-painful inputs, ultimately breaking the pain-spasm cycle. In addition, acupuncture has also been shown to induce a neurohormonal response which leads to reduced pain and inflammation.
Presidio Equine uses the veterinary industries leading radiograph and ultrasound imaging equipment developed by Sound Technologies. Our superior image quality allows us to perform detailed digital radiograph and ultrasound examinations in the field, giving us the ability to evaluate and then diagnose issues with accuracy and confidence.
Regenerative and autologous therapies allow us to improve the quality of healing when it comes to soft tissue injuries. They also allow us to reduce pain and inflammation associated with a joint without the use of a steroid. We routinely perform ultrasound and radiograph guided intra-lesional treatments, and offer ProStride and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy.
Should your primary veterinarian be unable to attend your show, we’re always happy to act on their behalf while you’re on the road. Whether that be for a pre-purchase exam, performance evaluation, lameness issue, or for routine care.
Presidio Equine respects the existing partnership with your primary vet and will work with all interests to address any issues your horse may face while at a show. We are also available to consult with veterinarians directly regarding complicated lameness cases.
Already have a diagnosis but wondering what to do next? Let's talk about rehab! We're happy to help you develop a treatment plan for your horse. This could include regenerative and therapeutic treatment modalities, or it could be something else altogether. We’ll review your options and find a plan that works for you. We’re also able to evaluate your horse's exercise activity, including stretching and core strengthening exercises, as well as therapeutic farriery options.
Routine vaccinations, dentistry and emergency services provided for established clients.
